It turns out that some boycotters who purchased the Modern Warfare 2 game for the PC had intentions not related to supporting Activision/IW. They now have dedicated servers!
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was released less than a week ago has been hacked. Boycotters purchased the game and have reversed engineered the game to allow them to run their own dedicated servers. These dedicated servers are ranked and are reporting to IWNET just fine.
So what does this mean for Activision/IW? Will they actively put forth a legal response to this action from angry gamers, or will they finally give them what they have been asking for all along? It seems safe to assume at this point that Activision/IW must meet the gamers demands as they are willing to take what they will. Many may argue that it is the property of the community who made the games popular, claiming that this act is not near as morally wrong as the way these companies have treated its supporters.
While there is no word on whether or not the ones responsible are going to be releasing the hack to the community, I personally believe that this is just the slap in the face these gaming companies needed in order to see how serious the Call of Duty community is about their demands.
Below is a video of the dedicated server in action:
